What exactly is a superfood? Superfoods are foods that contain phytonutrients and antioxidants that will protect cells from free-radical damage. They boost immunity and energy and can fight inflammation. Inflammation is a contributing factor to allergies, heart disease and bone health.
Dr. Frank Lippman who is the founder of the Eleven Eleven Wellness Center believes these are the top six super foods that pack a punch nutritionally:
~salmon– A rich source of vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin Bs, B3, B6 and B-12 (the energy vitamins)
~blueberries– Contain disease fighting phytochemicals, flavanoids and soluble fiber. Soluble fiber attracts water producing a gel during digestion. This slows down digestion.
~avocado- Contains a myriad of healthy fats and adds a creamy texture to smoothies. It has been proven to help protect against heart disease and cancer.
~walnuts- A small handful is packed with healthy omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E to protect the heart.
~chocolate- Helps to reduce inflammation and lower the “bad” cholesterol. I prefer 70-80% cacao as milk chocolate contains added sugar and dairy (I am allergic so try to avoid on most occasions).
~beans- Help raise the hormone leptin in the blood. Leptin suppresses appetite. They are full of B vitamins,calcium, potassium and folate.
~chia seeds- These are the richest source of plant-based omega-3 fatty acids.They are loaded with antioxidants, soluble and insoluble fiber (this quickens transit time of digested food), proteins and minerals.
