Bloating is a common complaint, and it seems like everyone is talking about it these days. Maybe it’s more openly discussed, or maybe more people are experiencing it. Either way, it’s a real issue that can cause discomfort.

What is Bloating?

Bloating is a feeling of abdominal fullness, tightness, or swelling. It can be temporary or chronic, and the experience varies from person to person. While occasional bloating is normal, frequent or severe bloating can be a sign of an underlying condition.

Causes of Bloating:

While bloating has many potential causes, here are some common culprits:

  • Gut Imbalance: Abnormal gut bacteria, slow digestion, or low stomach acid can contribute to bloating.
  • Food Sensitivities: FODMAPs or gluten sensitivity can trigger bloating.
  • Digestive Issues: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) can be causes.
  • Other Factors: Parasites, candida overgrowth, stress, certain medications, and even dietary changes like adding probiotics or fermented foods can cause bloating.
