Celery juice is all the rage now – but does it live up to all the hype? Should you be drinking it for the supposed healing qualities? It’s all over Instagram and Twitter as a panacea for health conditions. People are claiming it has cured them of their IBS, migraines, asthma, adrenal fatigue, etc.

But does it really work?

I get so many questions from clients, asking if celery juice can really do everything that experts say. People say it restores health, call it the ultimate healer, say it cures chronic illness and strengthens the immune system…

If you know me through reading my blogs, I am always skeptical of these fad diets and drinks that tout healing powers for all your ailments, fast weight loss, and such. There is no such thing as an instant “cure all” or magic trick that makes you lose weight fast.

My approach is to work toward lasting change built on a passion for yourself and your wellbeing. By following an 80/20 guideline, your body will heal itself over time – without all sorts of gimmicks.

BENEFITS OF CELERY

So, let’s look at the nutrients available in celery:

  • Vitamin K
  • B Vitamins
  • Potassium
  • Fiber
  • Manganese
  • Magnesium
  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin C
  • Phosphorous

Powerful Antioxidant

According to Parsley Health, a functional medicine practice founded by Dr. Robin Berzin, celery contains powerful antioxidants that can remove free radicals from the body. Studies show that foods rich in antioxidants can decrease the risk of getting cancer.

Prevents Chronic Diseases

According to Dr. Berzin, celery can prevent cardiovascular disease, jaundice, liver disease, urinary tract obstructions, gout, and rheumatic disorders. It can even reduce blood sugar levels, blood lipids, and blood pressure. In this study on diabetic rats, treatment with celery seed extract improved their glucose and insulin levels, improved weight, and increased antioxidant enzyme activity.

Improves Inflammation

Celery is high in antioxidants, and studies indicate that a diet high in antioxidants can help reduce inflammation. Studies show that celery improves gut function and gut mucosa in lab rats as well!

CONCLUSION:

Celery is rich in nutrients, antioxidants, and fiber (which is a bonus in my book). So, should celery juice be a part of your daily routine? It is not for everyone.

I always tell my clients who want to go on juice cleanses or drink juice regularly, that juicing removes the fiber from the vegetable. This is such an important component of the vegetable.

Across the country, people are only getting 9-11 grams of fiber a day – and we need 25-50 grams per day! Fiber is crucial for regulating blood sugar levels and removing toxins from the body, and provides regular bowel movements.

At Nourishing Lab, we are about lasting, sustainable change. There is not one “quick fix” that will miraculously improve your overall health. If you feel more mindful about your eating habits by including celery juice, then by all means add it into your diet – but your health is ultimately about your choices throughout the day… And the consistency of those choices day after day, week after week.

There are so many new trends that claim healing powers popping up every day. How do you navigate this information?

  1. Find out the source of the information – is the resource credible?
  2. Is it promising healing powers without changing anything else in your diet?
  3. Who is endorsing this trend? Is it a celebrity or paid partnership?
  4. Have you done any research on medical websites?
  5. Does it make any sense? If the source is claiming something that feels far-fetched, could the results even be possible?

Celery and celery juice certainly have their benefits, but it’s not going to be a magical cure-all for all of your health concerns. Try celery and celery juice out for yourself, but remember that real change comes from consistency, daily choices, and a heart full of compassion and love for yourself!
